Verket & Avesta Art
1874 industrial ironworks cathedral transformed into an international contemporary art museum
About this Destination
Verket in Koppardalen is one of Sweden's most dramatic industrial heritage sites (designated of National Cultural Heritage Interest / Riksintresse). Built beginning in 1874, the site preserves historic charcoal blast furnaces, roasting kilns, and machinery halls. Each summer since 1995, it hosts 'Avesta Art', filling vast multi-level brick chambers with site-specific sculpture, glass, digital media, and light installations. Interactive technology and audio tours bring 150 years of Swedish metallurgy to life.
Season & Visiting Schedule
Main Avesta Art exhibition runs May through September; group bookings, corporate events, and select winter events by reservation.
Accessibility
Ramps and elevators provide access to primary exhibition halls; some historic catwalks have stepped access.
