Gamla Byn (The Old Village)

17th-century Falu-red timber quarter preserving Sweden's royal copper coin heritage

About this Destination

In 1636, a massive copper refining works was established at the Avestaforsen rapids to process ore from the Falun Mine. From 1644 until 1831, the Avesta Mint (Myntverket) produced virtually all of Sweden's copper currency, including the famed giant 10-daler copper plate coins. Gamla Byn is the preserved residential settlement where mint artisans and workers lived. Today, its quiet lanes, heritage gardens, and preserved timber architecture offer a tranquil glimpse into early Swedish industrial culture.
